La Victoria

La Victoria is a barrio where Rubiela and her 6 brothers and sisters live, most of them in a house that their mum made. When I lived in Bogotá I travelled here every week but it wasn't a safe place to spend time. It has really changed! The open sewers have been changed into a lovely lawn and there are now great community areas like this basketball court. We met up with Yanira, Rubiela's sister, and her 3 boys. Despite language difficulties the children all loved playing together. The views are amazing in this city, surrounded by lush green mountains! The weather is always like this cloudy and bright, bright sunshine with rain on and off all the time.

Old friends

This is my good friend Rubiela, with her youngest  daughter - Tatiana - who I hadn't met before. We have been here in Bogotá one week and it's been a week full of old friends. Catching up on 19 years of stories may seem impossible, but it has been so precious! Each day has brought someone new.

Rubén's Amazing Café

We went to a man called Rubén's, café. He used to be a street kid but now he owns a really nice place with food he cooks! He purposely employs women with no job and gives them a decent wage.

In his house he has two dogs. One of them (the brown one) he rescued off the street. It had a badly broken leg. The vets had to amputate it! :( He now only has three legs. The other one was very popular. Probably because he was the fluffiest and the one Joseph described as wistful.

The café was just around the corner from The National Museum which was very interesting! there were paintings by a very famous man called Botero. He mainly draws fat women!

Bogotá, Colombia

Home to ten million souls, not including livestock.

Bogotá at last

Our home for the next fortnight is a house in a Conjunto in the 187th Calle (street or block) from the centre of Bogotá (Calle 0). Our hosts are Kathleen and Grant (at the head of the table) who Emelye worked with in 1999 for IMC - In Ministry with Children, a christian charity who help children who live on the streets, or have family members in jail or are young carers, they send them to school and university, teach them English and bring them to the Lord, often enabling them to get a job and live a better life.

Breakfast with our hosts for the next two weeks - Spanish scrambled eggs on fresh toast with home made pineapple juice

Ahiaco for dinner, a traditional Colombian dish with
five different types of potatoes and chicken broth
